Considerations for Selecting Custom Resistors
Resistors are important components of electrical circuits. Without the incorporation of resistors, circuits would not be complete and able to convey a current. The role of the resistor is to provide a resistance to the flow of current in a circuit so that the other device is not damaged by an excess current.
Variable resistors which have a resistance that can be adjusted, as well as the fixed resistors whose value of resistance is constant, are the two common types of resistors. Even these two categories of resistors have not been sufficient to serve the needs of the growing and advancing technology of electronics, so custom resistors have been invented to fill this demand. Custom electronic devices are the ones that require custom resistors in order to work. The fact that they are very precise and accurate when in operation is the reason they are also referred to as the precision resistors. There are some factors that have to be considered when choosing custom resistors. A few of these factors are described here.
The necessary resistance for the circuit to operate. You are supposed to know the total resistance for a particular circuit before you choose the resistor to supply this resistance. This value of total resistance is the amount of resistance that should be supplied by the resistor chosen. Resistance is measured in Ohms using an ohmmeter. Once this value has been established, you can then look for a custom resistor that fits it.
Power rating on the resistor is the other factor to consider. Power rating is actually the amount of electrical power, measured in Watts, which will be dissipated by the resistor. The amount of resistance, voltage and current flowing through an electrical circuit will determine the amount of power in the circuit. When the value of the square of voltage is divided by the resistance in the circuit, the result obtained is the power. If the voltage and the resistance in a circuit are known, power rating can be computed and the value used to select the appropriate custom resistor.
You also have to factor in resistor construction when selecting a custom resistor. Construction in this regard has to do with the type of material used to make it. Custom resistors are normally produced from different kinds of materials. These include a metal film, a carbon composition, a foil, a thick and thin film, among many other materials. The type of material usually determines the way in which the resistor will work in terms of resisting the current.
How the resistor is mounted in the circuit. You definitely have to think about how the resistor will be mounted into the circuit. Resistors could be bracket mounted, panel mount, PC or surface mount types. The positioning of the board in the device will dictate which mounting will be adopted for the resistor. You have to ensure that you get the proper resistor to fit the mounting technique on your circuit.
